How Long Does a Dental Implant Last?

If you’re struggling with missing teeth, the good news is that these days you have many ways to restore your smile and feel confident showing off your teeth.

One of the most popular ways to do that is through a dental implant. They are artificial teeth that look and function just like natural teeth.

But dental implants may require an investment, especially if you need to replace multiple teeth. Also, you might have learned that the healing timeline could be six months or longer.

So, are implants worth it? How long do they last? Let's discuss!

How Do Dental Implants Work?

The question of how long an implant lasts is difficult to answer without first explaining how these artificial teeth work.

Implants are made from three distinct elements:

  • Metal post
  • Abutment
  • Dental crown

The metal post is placed into the jaw bone and acts as the root of the tooth. Then, once the bone and tissues fuse to the implant (in around 6 months), the abutment is added. This piece is a connector and also helps absorb some of the shock put on the tooth when chewing.

Lastly, the dental crown is secured over the abutment, and the restoration is complete.

Dental Implants Average Lifespan

Dental implants are permanent tooth replacements, at least when it comes to the metal post and abutment.

But the dental crown is subject to wear and tear. Usually, this part of the implant can last around 10 to 15 years, maybe more with the right care. If the crown is damaged, you don’t have to go through the implant surgery again.

The metal post and abutment can be damaged, but such cases are rare. It can happen because of a severe accident that damages the jawbone or advanced gum disease.

How to Care for a Dental Implant

You can extend the lifespan of a dental implant by:

  • Brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing daily
  • Wearing a mouthguard while playing sports or if you grind your teeth
  • Not smoking or using tobacco products
  • Not chewing on hard objects like pen caps
  • Cutting back on snacking, especially sugary treats
  • Eating more fresh vegetables and fruits to increase saliva production, etc.

Apart from this, you can also maintain your implant by seeing a dentist every six months for check-ups and professional dental cleanings. Preventative visits decrease your risk for implant damage and other oral health issues like gum disease or cavities.
